CHRISTMAS CAME early to
Lions Gate Hospital Dec. 8 when
the North Vancouver District Fire
Department presented a $15,000
cheque to the Lions Gate Hospital
Foundation for the purchase of a
children's cardiac monitor.

The money, which will cover the
total cost of the monitor, was rais-
ed at a Casino Night held by the
firefighters with the specific pur-
pose of contributing to the care of
children at the hospitai.

The monitor is a valuable tool in
the treatment of seriously ill
children, such as those suffering
from asthma or meningitis or re-
covering from major surgery. It
provides non-intrusive monitoring
of heart rate and rhythm, respira-
tory rate and the oxygen level in
the child’s blood stream.

works by light transmission so the
probe simply sits on the child's
finger or is wrapped around a leg
and is completely non-invasive. It
will give the medical staff the in-
formation we need without any
trauma to the child.”’

Acquisition of the children’s
cardiac monitor will mean that the
pediatrics unit will no longer have
to borrow time on the smaller in-
fant’s monitor in the Special Care
Nursery or, if that monitor was in
use or unsuitable for the patient,
try to find another hospital with an
available children’s monitor.
