Bina ciate & 8 - Wednesday, June 7, 2989 - North Shore News Enforce pollution laws in Sound 7 ean | alking tick: ecently I got e jayw: ick- et. It reminded me that we have in our society the ways and means to _ enforce the laws of the land. Of course I argued with the police officer, saying things like “Haven’t you got better things to do?”’, because I really didn’t want to pay the $25 for crossing the street mid-block. It got me think- ing. The pulp mills have been break- ing the law in B.C. for years. They pollute, endanger health, kill wildlife and compromise any future for the beauty and magic that is B.C. And no ticket. They flagrantly disregerd the laws of nature and the laws that our governments have set down and still no ticket. No policeman up on a motorcycle to say, “You can’t do that.’’ And that _ made me mad, There is a spineless lack of in- dependent thinking in the en- forcers of our environmental laws. They have given free rein to the industries that are big and rich and powerful enough to influence them. Shortsighted greed Is in charge here, and no one will escape the consequences; not my children, not yours and not the pulp mill owners’. The government allows it to continue. You and I allow the government to continue. Our. apathy is seen as approval. When a poll before the federal showed that 52 per cent of Canadians thought environment the most important issue, all of a sudden we had party leaders talk- ing about the environment. The last budget with multiple spending cute has allotted more money to ent Nolse makes pressure and con- cerned people make noise. The government ‘not enforce our environmental laws unless they are embarrassed not to. Some day they may do their job ADVERTISING CORRECTION SUMMER LOOK AY EATON'S NOW Page 19, Item B.C — Panasonic Microcassette Recorders, RN 115 should be “C"'", AV105 should be "8"; keying is revereed.
