Kudos to Doug Collins for his series of columns on what he saw during his tour of South Africa. Good for him, going to look for himself. It is clear from the media’s own reports, no matter how they try to disguise it, that much of the violence in South Africa is directed by blacks at other blacks. With so many of them behaving this way, it is no wonder that the whites are terrified of the idea of ma- what will happen, but far from fearing it, will be satisfied with nothing less. It is also clear that the government of South Africa is doing very littie to ameliorate the situetion or anyone’s perception of it. The heavy-handed repres- sion of dissent and the attempted censorship of repor- ling on it do nothing but generate suspicion and mistrust. It all makes me wonder if some of their pol- iticians don't have a death wish. I understand it to be SPCA policy that animals domiciled in their shelters, including six-week-old kittens, are fed a scant ration of dry food once a day. This food is as nourishing as sawdust. This was reported to Michael Weeks of the SPCA, but no action has been taken. The cages were also without litter trays, which have been in- troduced since my complaint. The two municipalities contribute a total of $200,000 per annum to maintain this shelter and provide adequate and comfortable care for our abandoned and unwanted pets, surely there should be sufficient funding for a regular feeding of canned food as well as the dry. If its behavior was not marred by the discomfort that it causes its victims, the antics of this council of inquisitors would rivai the Jackie Gleason Show. G.A.
