Ao - Wednesday, October 10, 1984 - North Shore News Red herring? evival of the ‘‘in-fill housing’? con- troversy in West Van by Ambleside and Dundarave Ratepayers Associa- tion spokesmen has a smell of red herring. The controversy was originally sparked by several routine planning staff studies over re- cent years which examined theoretical in-fill housing possibilities in the area over the next decade or so. Such studies are a normal part of a planning department’s work and do NOT automatically represent council policy. This was conclusively demonstrated last spr- ing when the consolidated planning depart- ment study came before council for con- sideration. Noting the opposition of the ratepayers’ association to the in-fill concept, and on the recommendation of Mayor Humphreys, council voted 4-3 against any action on the study at the present time. That remains council policy today. The council decision did not, however, sat- isfy association president Edward McKay and the three dissenting aldermen who sought, in addition, public meetings on the issue. Mr. McKay has now produced an opi- nion survey reportedly confirming strong homeowner opposition to in-fill housing and has renewed the association’s demand for the public meetings. Normally we favor such open forums. But in the present case, with a majority of coun- cil already endorsing the association's view- point, it’s difficult to see exactly what useful purpose public meetings would serve at this stage. Unless, of course, their sponsors have an ulterior motive---to attempt to create an elec- tion issue where none actually exists. Age and alcohol RUNK driving must be stamped out by every effective means, but raising the drinking ape from 19 to 21 would be merely an empty gesture. Kids of 14 have litle problem in obtaining booze, so why penalize responsible young adults of legal age when gas and alcohol are just as lethal at 31, 41 or 51? Stepped -up education and much harsher jail penalties are the REALISTIC answer. 10h RE UF UNE AD RO!
