If anything, business ts down right now due to the construction that’s been go- ing on for about three to four weeks,’’ says Ray Matheson, of Gregg TV and Radio Ltd. ‘‘The area cer- tainly looks more appealing and the customers are noticing it and commenting on it. I’m personally hoping that the project helps out the businesses. But I'll know more in about six months.’’ John Toomer of Van- couver General Insurance Agency is not one to mince words. He bluntly says the area was previously an ‘‘eyesore’’ and was in dire need of a facelift. ‘‘Overall, I’m pleased with the project. Everything, especially the colour of the lamp-posts, really adds to the area. Plus, we'll benefit from publicity, since pro- motion is part and parcel of the whole project,’’ said Toomer. The Edgemont Village Revitalization project) was iniually introduced to North Vancouver District Council in the fall of 1981. The provincial government con- tributed an outright grant of $5,000 for planning costs, then made preferable loans available to the merchants tn the amount of $365,000. ‘“‘Normally the provincial revitalization stimulates JOANNE MacDONALD government only contributes 7S per cent funding towards beautification, but they were so impressed with the project Edgemont project they donated 100 per cent towards the project,’’ says district planner Kai Kreuchen. ‘‘They’ve also made facade improvement grants available to merchants, up to a max- imum of $200 per metre of frontage.’’ The $1.9 million tab for local improvement and beautification costs were shared jointly by the District and local merchants. Susan Rhodes, of the Clairvoyance Boutique, says several longtime residents have made positive com- ments regarding the project. As for local florist Peter Haddaway, he says it is a ‘‘real treat to have sidewalks."" Edgemont Village Mer- chants Association president Ron Statham says he is grateful for the contribu- ulons and cooperation from the provincial government and the District of North Vancouver. Statham says several merchanis have begun to “spruce up their buildings’’ since the project began, with many already gearing up for the Village’s grand opening on June 2. In addition to both pro- vincial and municipal dignitaries, the opening will feature a parade, music by local bands, refreshments, a fashion show and _ several other activities.
