Whelan inrace,
Turner in lead

EUGENE WHELAN,

who __ boasts

of being

Canada’s best-known politician in the world, has
thrown his distinctive green felt cowboy hat into
the federal Liberal leadership race.

Whelan became the sev-
enth candidate this week, at
the same time polis were
released showing John
Turner has a comfortable
early lead in the number of
committed delegates for the
June 1S convention.

Whelan told reporters his
cowboy hat and the fact he
represents Canada at most
world meetings make him
the best-known Canadian
politician in the world.

Whelan told reporters he
was entering the campaign as
an ordinary Canadian who
was offering the party his
‘'valuable successful
experience, based on the
working man"'

Whelan 1s SY and has
spent 12 years in Cabinet
The only post he has held is
as Agriculture Minister. He
is also” president of the

World Food Council.

Meanwhile figures
released this week show
John Turner is far ahead of
the other candidates in the
race to replace Prerre
Trudeau with about 70 of
the committed delegates so
far elected. Only about half
of the 200 delegates elected
in constituency elections
have announced a
preference

Turner's 70 puts him well
ahead of all other candidates
who, between them, have the
support of about 40 com-
mitted delegates

But so tar only about tive
per cent of the Liberal riding
associations have held the
delegation selechion meetings
and the tigures released this
week are expected to change
dramatically with a flurry of
meetings between now and

the May 10 deadline for
delegate selection.

At the party level,
Turner and Jean Chretin,
thought to be his nearest
challenger, each claim the
support of about 50 MPs
and Turner has strong sup-
port among those Cabinet
ministers who are net in-
volved in the leadership race.

The new Liberal leader is
expected to reign as Prime
Mimster for only a= short
time before announcing a
tederal election, likely for
this November
