There ts simply is no other solution.” On May 5 elect HEALTH CARE plans by the B.C. government in 1983-84 pose a serious threat to North Shore hospital and community health services already operating on a shoestring, according to David Schreck, NDP candidate for North Van- couver-Seymour. “Since the Socred ‘restraints’ were announced last year we have watched Lions Gate Hospital struggle to deliver quality care, in spite of record surgical waiting lists, enforced bed closures and staff layoffs and the loss of vital out-patient programs,” said Schreck, a health care expert and currently manager of CU&C Health Services. “This will worsen if hospitals get the zero budget increase proposed by Health Minister Nielsen when he spoke to board chairmen. Despite the best plans by government, people wiil continue to get sick but the vital services and_ skilled staff will not be there.” Schreck added that community health capabilities struggle to deal with budget problems of their own. We simply cannot expect volunteer groups to deal with the fall-out from this government’s insensitivity.” Schreck said. If elected, the NDP will immediately scrap the health ministry’s 1983-84 plan. ensure that the most urgently needed hospital beds are reopened = and guarantee that = medicare coverage is available for all, Schreck said.
