B C AUTOMOBILE ASSOCIATION UAW talks continue DETROIT (UPD — The United Auto Workers laid out demands last week for skilled trades workers to Chrysler Corp. as contract negotiations entered their second week. Meanwhile, a_ trade publication reported General Motors Corp. and Ford Motor Co. plan to build 200,000 fewer cars than expected in the last half of the year, quashing the in- dustry’s chances for a production rebound. The UAW last week presented Chrysler with the first eight of 24 policy papers on various contract issues. On top of the pile when negotiations resumed in the morning was the union's demand dealing with the skilled trades portion of the contract. Skilled trades workers are considered the cream of the blue collar crop and often work overtime and weekend hours. They generally hold higher seniority and make more money than normal non-skilled hourly workers. No formal briefing was slated by the union, since UAW chief bargainer Marc Stepp is out of town. The UAW and Chrysler opened negotiations last week on a contract replacing the pact expiring Sept. 14. Chrysler's 60,600 active workers granted the com- pany $662 million in con- cessions early last year. The union is_ seeking restoration of cost of living benefits, job security and guarariteed income for senor workers. The com- pany hopes to secure reforms in costly medical and pension benefits. U.S. automakers now are expected to build 5.4 milhion cars by the end of the year, a decline of nearly 14 per cent from last year’s 6.2 million. Big three to keep prices down DETROIT (UPD - Ford Motor Co. announced last week it will only raise prices minimally on autos pur- chased by fleet buyers, a strong indication all Big Three automakers will hold the line on new car prices. Analysts say automakers rarely digress from fleet prices in setting retail price tags. The action by Ford, which comes a few weeks after sumtlar actions by General Motors Corp. and Chrysler Corp.. likely will mean retail buyers can expect the same small increases or none when they they enter showrooms this fall. Ford has notified dealers that fleet prices on sub- compact Escort and Lynx and compact Fairmont and Zephyr models will be no higher than the current base price of 1982 models. Ford also said it will hold prices on all other cars and light trucks to no more than two per cent over the current sticker price. Not covered are the company’s aerodynamically styled new mid-sized cars for which prices have not yet been determined. A company official said Ford took the action “just to be competitive with GM”. Ford spokesman Bill Peacock cautioned that retail prices’ will not necessanily be exactly the same as fleet prices because of changes the automaker can made in the price of equipment that is added cars FREE COURTESY CARS Fo ae i Hey ’ FORD—MERC.—GEN ALL WORK GUA cou 987-7111 We’re BCAA approved!
