AXWORTHY CRITICAL OF CHAMBER RECOMMENDATIONS Maternity benefits protected OTTAWA (UPC) - Minister responsible for the Status of Women Lloyd Axworthy Tuesday criticized a recom- . mendation by the Canadian Chamber of Commerce that maternity benefits be removed from the Unem- ployment Insurance Plan. The Chamber, representing businessmen from across the country, also opposed equal pension rights for men and women at its annual meeting in Quebec City. “Economic independence for women has been ac- cepted as a basic principle for federal government action,” Axworthy said. “It follows logically that there must be economic support for women who work and who have children. It's too easily forgotten that among families where both spouses work, 51 per cent more families would fall below the poverty line if the wives stayed home.” Canada is already behind NIGHT SCHOOL NOTES By LOIS LIGHT If you were one of the four hundred or so who attended the “Nightschool in a Day” program on Oct. 4, you probably don't have to be convinced that it’s a great way to spend a Saturday, and beats housecleaning or polishing the car all to bits. You, and you others who dido’t make it, will, we hope, be anticipating the next such day — November 15. One course that could be special fun to use around Christmas is ‘Magic’, an introduction to basic sleight of hand, tricks with coins, cards, ropes, etc. The in- structor is a professional with over 30 years ex- perience. Your young people might be interested in this. Not like the {0-week course where you can too easily miss lectures because you're many other western indus- tnahzed countries in pro- viding maternity benefits, Axworthy said, responding to the policy adopted by the Chamber. “For example, France provides 14 weeks at 90 per cent salary and parental leave for up to two years. Great Britain, Germany, Italy and Sweden have Similar provisions.” Women are now entitled to eight months of maternity leave and eight weeks of the da a mite bored and “know you should but don’t want to”. You can do a lot of learning during this Saturday; and all for $16 (plus lunch, my goodness). Any program aimed at providing pension rights which discriminate against women would run counter to the equality principles of the government, Axworthy said. Unless = discriminatory clauses in pension plans are eliminated, the _ often “desperate” situation of older women will prevail, he said. Recent federal studies have shown that one out of three Canadian women will hardly help but find useful. This will be at Sutherland, from 7:30 to 9:30.
