Al2-Sunday News, September 7, 1980 community roundup | Photography as art in North Van exhibit By OLGA RUSKIN Images in Color, a show and sale of color photographs by North Vancouver photographer Ken Oxenham, will open Wednesday. September 10 at 7:30 p.m. in the North Van City Hall gallery. Sponsored by the North Van Community Arts Council, the show continues to October 8. The 20 photographs in the show are described by Oxenham as natural ab Stracts with a design- orientation. Oxenham, who was born in North Van and raised in West Van, graduating from West Van Secondary in 1971, decided to take up photography as a career in 1974. He graduated with a B.A. from a leading school of photography, the Brooks Institute of Photography in Santa Barbara, in 1978. While at Brooks he became interested in the art of the photo. “Photography is an art form in itself. A good photo should have some type of impact on the viewer. It should reach out and grab the audience. Shadow and highlights can be used to create this impact for a three dimensional effect. The use of strong bold lines to carefully bring the viewer into the photograph is an essential technique a good picture must employ,” says Oxenham. “But a good photograph should be pre-concetved in the mind before being et- ched onto film.” Oxenham uses a 4X5 View camera and a Hassenblad camera in his work. He is also a freelance commercial photographer and has done work in this capacity for pubhcations such as Western Living, Vancouver Calendar and Vancouver Guidelines. Public interest in photography as an art form has boomed in the past decade. A greater number of people are turning to collecting photographic prints as the cost of other art forms increases, notes Time Magazine in its September 3, 1979 issue. Art photographs can also increase in value. Photographs by the late Paul Strand have been sold for as much as $12,000 a print. points out Time. The public is invited to attend the opening of Images in Color from 7:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. on September 10. The hours of the North Van City Hall gallery at 141 West 14th Ave. are 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday to Friday. “STAIRWAY” — a picture taken by Ken Oxenham in Vancouver earlier this year — provides a dramatic illustration of the possibilities of photography as abstract art.
