go to sea HALIFAX (UPC) - Women are going to sea for the first time in Canadian naval history, and the captain of the HMCS Cormorant will be keeping a close watch to see what effect their presence has on shipboard morale. “Throughout their two year tour of duty, I have been instructed to write quarterly reports on any changes in morale or operational - effectiveness,” said ship's captain Lt. Cmdr. Gil Morrison. But he said he does not expect any disciplinary problems to arise from the addition of the eight women who took up active duty Thursday. The women will serve as administrative clerk, petty officer and cooks. “The women will get no special consideration and I believe they want it that way,” Morrison said. “As far as relationships between male and female crew, common sense will prevail. They know that. outward romances or emotional displays aboard the ship will not be tolerated.” The eight female sailors were equally optimistic they can bring the navy into the modern era without any commotion. “Tm hoping our presence will improve morale, if it changes at all,” said Sub.-Lt. Louise Fish of Toronto, the ship's Supply Officer and the only officer among the eight. “For the navy, allowing us to serve on board will mean a wider pool of personnel to select from when vacancies occur. And for us we have the option now of a com- pletely different en- vironment.” The captain said the crew has been briefed on the transition for more than a year and “after the initial shock” they have accepted the change. HMCS Cormorant’s first trip out of Halifax begins April 22 for a week of diving exercises on the Scotian shelf.
