‘Wave-patterns are ‘random,
rather than regular, and they
don’t fit so neatly into a
formula. Who feels up to
counting waves all day
anyway? “Watch out, No.
285 is rolling in. Hold on!”

Wave forms.-are rather
cycloidal in the open sea.
The slopes near the top are
steeper than they are near
the bottom. The one-foot sea
generated by a  10-knot
breeze may have a wave
length of 27 feet, and a
period of just - under three
seconds. That four to five®
foot wave driven by a 20
knot wind may have a wave
length of 111 feet and*a_
period of 5.4 seconds.

Waves move at about half
the. speed of the wind that
causes them. And a group of |
waves in a system will move >
at about half the speed of an
individual wave. In the case
of a 30-knot wind, the in-
dividual waves seem to move
at about 25 feet per second
or just a hair under 15 knots.

masses intrude, all the way
around the world. This is the
infamous “Roaming Forties”
of the old wooden ship days.
Giant ‘rogue waves are
common, and it is
responsible for the heavy
seas around Cape Horn.

in the waves of the open sea.

As any skipper who ever
ran an inlet when an ebb tide
was bucking a_ seabreeze
knows well current can
affect the waves. A following
current increases wave
length, reduces height. An
Opposing current does the
opposite. It will reduce the
length from crest to crest,
and make the seas higher.
They may even become so
steep they break, like surf.

Our inlets can be ex-
tremely dangerous when the
tide is running against the
sea waves. There are also
storm waves, common
enough in hurricanes. ‘In
part, the rise in water is due
to the low barometric
pressure. A drop of one inch
on the barometer can mean
a rise of more than one foot
at sea. Add on strong winds,
and their tendency to pile up
a mass of water, and you can
have a 20-foot wall of water
