On Nov. 7 it agreed unanimads-
ly to support the call for an inde.
pendent judicial review into the
management and protecdon of the
West Coast salmon runs.

Letters from the B.C. Fisheries
Survival Coalition (BCFSC) and
Delta MP John Cummins calling
for an inquiry with the power to
compel witnesses and take sworn
testimony triggered the debate.

Two weeks ago the City of
North Vancouver rejected the same
sal for support. with some mem-
bers of council citing the potential
cost and length of judicial reviews

An Independent Review Board
has been appointed by federal
Minister of Fisheries Brian Tobin
ta study the loss of same three sil
lion salmon onthe Fraser River this
year.

But Cunuuins says the review
“is simply another in-house study
conducted for the most part by per-
sons already advising the Fisheries’
Department on its operations,

The BCFSC says alinost 50 of
the Fraser River salmon stocks
have been damagzed in the past
three years.

“There will be no public scruti-
ny of the evidence, no assurance
thatthe committee reviewed all the
possible causes of the tragedy and
no protection for DFO employees
