Cpens today. Julie Crawford Fiim Reviews THEY say there are no good parts for women in Hoilywood. With its almost exclusively female cast, thank good- ness for Gi7l, Interrupted, which kept a dozen or so actresses off the dole for another year. The film, based on Susanna Kaysen’s autobio- graphical novei of the same name, chronicles the author's almost two-year stint in a tony psychiatric hospital out- side Boston, Among McLean’s famous patients were James Taylor and Sylvia Plath, who immortalized her hospital stay in The Bell Jar. In 1967 iz only took one short interview and a phone call to admit Susanna to McLean. Girl, Interrupted gives a voice to those people wrongfully committed (homosexuals, anorexics), but doesn’t skirt the fact that sometimes young women just wanted a little holiday after prep school. (Yes, real- icy bites.) Ryder plays Susanna, who is diagnosed with the somewhat vague “borderline personality disorder,” in earnest. Her char- acter is not entirely likeable, however, and Ryder docs a good job of eliciting both our sympathy and our scorn. By the ime nurse Val (Whoopi Goldberg) tells Susanna that she’s just a spoiled litte girl avoiding the rest of her life, we feel like standing up and cheering. She makes friends with a motley crew of inmates including her roommate Georgina (Clea DuVall), a pathological liar; Daisy, (Brittany Murphy), who has a penchant for whole deli chickens and slicing her arms; Polly (Elizabeth Moss), a timid - burn victim; and Lisa (Angelina Jolie), a seductive sociopath. Ryder abdicates much of the star power of the film to Jolie, who Is electric in every scene. She’s already been awarded a Golden Globe nomination for her efforts, and is a shoo-in for ak . (Whether the role was that much of a stretch for the self-professed snake- loving, knife-obsessed daughter of Jon Voight, is another story.) Girl, Interrupted is Winona Ryder’s baby. It took years to find anyone to back the film, and Ryder.(with an executive producer credit) always made sure her other films didn’t get in the way of a possible “Girl” go-ahead. Was it worth her effort? There are some minor continuity problems, a basement chase scene should’ve been omitted altogether, and someone should've told Jared Leto how ridiculous he looked in that fake moustache and beard. Despite some good performances, at times “Girl, Interrupted” feels like a demented slumber party, rather thai a commentary on mental illness ia the rurbulent late *60s. Join our fascinating team!
