Most readers are probably unaware of how much material is actually recycled , on.thé: North Shore. Well, we can tell tonnes in 1997 to, be What about 1 298? Well, we're very pleased to annotiticé that the numbers are up from 1997. Up until the end of July 1998, we had collected 6,809 tonnes of recyclables conipared with 5,740 tonnes for the same period last year. This is an increase of almost 19%, 2 very good result considering the new expanded recycling program only became effective in May of this year. With the new weekly curbside yard trimmings col- lection program, our compostable tonnage has really jumped. By the end of July 1997 we had received 7,485 tonnes of yard trimmings and wood. The curbside collection started in April of this year and by the end of July our tonnage had increased to 11,315 tonnes, a whopping 51% increase. What docs all this mean? Well if you compare the recycling and yard trimmings tonnages to the amount of garbage dis- posed of during the first 7 months of 1998, we have been success- ful in diverting almost 41% rake home of the wasie stream. That's quite a feat. We feel confident that we will achieve our goal of 50% waste reduction by the year 2000. mpertant Guidelines for Yard Trimmings Col lection €3 Unlimited amounts of dear bags and tied bundies will be collected weekly from March 1 to NOVEMBER 30.
