ey Sere NV City Bunny dreams misguided | Dear Editor: In an age where women are suffering increasing amounts of sexual abuse at the hands of misguided males, or very simply being passed on tor something younger and more beautiful, f hardly sce July 19°s article on Teila Shaw as a laudable piece of journalism deserv- ing of the attention given to it. Can becoming a Playboy hunny actually be I couldn't help but wonder “how proud Teila Shaw would be if she knew how her naked expose will contribute in part to the pain and suffering of countless women who find themselves unloved and devalued because of an airbrushed photo of another young girl in a “classy” magazine. [s $25,000 U.S. really reward eneugh for Dear Editor: 1 was reading the article in the North Shore News awhile back about Mayor Jack Loucks undecided as to whether to run again for mayor of North Vancouver City, The mayor is 80 years old. Give me a break please. How ‘nany people actually vored for Mr. Loucks ir the last electian? A few hun- dred? Nobods seems to vote in North Van City. There is no interest. It's the same old people year after year. Mr. Loucks has served the city well. Let’s wish nim well and hope he won't embarrass himself and run again. We don’t need a mayor who is completely out of touch with what the citizens of North Vancouver want. Anyone who has been to a city council meeting or who has watched it on television, realizes that Mr. Friday, July 31, 1998 — North Shore News - 9 north shore news MAIL BOX helping destroy someone clse’s dreams of being foved and accepted for who they are despite their physical flaws? Chris Jordan-knox North Vancouver is served by stale counc!! Lonsdale is starting to fook like the West End of Vancouver with all these highrises. Is this whar the cit: population really wants? The mega-church proposal by the Alliance Church at 23rd and St. Georges is certainly not for the benefit of the city population. Some of the city council said it is a great idea to go ahead with this huge expansion because they said it is a good church. Are not the other churches in the city just as valuable? Let's get away from doing favors for friends of council. We need a new third crossing. For reasons only known to Mavor Loucks, he thinks the Lions Gate Bridge with a facelift is good for the 21st century. P wonder how often Mr. Loucks drives across the Lions Gate Bridge? We need a mayor and council who will do what is right for the majority of citizens, not Loucks should step aside. We need some younger persons on city council with some common sense. Central Cruising hazards revealed Dear Editor: The recent passenger sickness incident regard- ing the Regal Princess has brought to light a problem that scems to affect most cruise ships vot just the Princess Line — the transmission of viral infections through the air conditioning, sys- tems. From my experience, asa frequent cruiser, the virus can soon develop into bronchial and flu type problems if nor treated quickly with incibiotics. The passen-_ ger cabin can be one cf the worst places tor infection, as nearly always the air condition- ing units, without indi- vidual fan control, blow directly onto the bed. The *Regal” problem should be taken seriously by the cruise industry and steps taken to pro- tect their passengers trom similar occurrences by ensuring that they maintain and thoroughly sterilize the air condi- tioning systems much more regularly. Cruising is a wonder- ful way to have a holiday but sickness is not the memorable experience one expects tu receive. Judy Brennan West Vancouver just a few. Let’s go for it triends of the ciry! Lorne E. Dennis North Vancouver Rec referendum needed in W. Yan Dear Editor: We know that our society has allowed our provincial and federal governments to become virtual dictatorships. For this attitude to arise in some West Vancouver councillors’ thraking needs to be nipped in the bud. During the impertant July 6 West Vancouver Council deba‘e concerning a proposed recreation centre to serve the western part of our sionyated arca some members led by Councillor Victor Durman, stated that they did nor want a referendum as proposed by Councillor Allan Williams because “it would not pass.” The finance director had reported that West Vancouver had the money in reserves to pay for the western facility and tor updating the present recreation centre at 22nd Street. Thar money belongs to the taxpayers/shareholders/voters of West Vancouver. In che past ne ry new schools, trunk sewer systems pro- posed Cypress golf course and other matters bave been satistac- torily put to the taxpayers by money bylaw or referendum tor opinion. Sport and recreation is now a top priority physically and financially in our seciety, The necessary facilities for present and future West Vancouver residents need clear presentation of the pros and cons for a referendum decision rather than be left to a geographically stacked meeting of 1% of the taxpayers as rook place at Gleneagles school. Derrick Humphreys West Vancouver A poor cable connection Dear Editor: Is there anyone else out there who is fed up with monopolies? Tam fed up to here with Rogers Cablesystems. We have been contacting them almost daily since June 28, asking them to hook us up to the upgraded programming. They have promised each time to have it in the next day or, worse see- nario, the followirg one. But we still do net t have it. Wimbledon is past. Phe World Cup is over. Yet we are still waiting to be connected! ‘This from a firm in communications! | wonder if we will have it in time for the next World Cup in four years time, Jean Moore West Vancouver Local highway bonehead alert issued Dear Editor: Re: Shaun Contin column. Having just done a column on drivers who slow dawn on the treeway (Friday, July 1G3) has Shaun Contin considered doing a column on the variety of bonchead that pop ulates Highway 99 north te Squamish and bevond? I speak of those learning: impaired drivers who, after getting a fineup of 20-plus cars behind them while doing 50 km-h on the way to Whistler, they suddenly discover the gas pedal on the passing Janes and their cars amazingly speed up to 120 km-h.
