At the beginning of this centu- ry the former Incan capital was still one of the country’s leading cultural centres and provided Chambi with a base for his business and artistic aspirations. The son of an Indian peas- ant, he documented the difter- ent strata of Peruvian society. “As with most studio photeg- raphers, Chambi sought to portray the town’s public fig- ures, the powers that be.
