WHILE other govern-
ments cut back on
spending, Narth
Vancouver City Council
is making $2.8-million
plans to expand and
renovate city hall.

According to Mussatto,
space is at a premium in the civic
centre.

“We could be fined because
we don’t have a first-aid room.
Council chambers need to. be
made wheelchair accessible,”

He also said seating capacity
in the chambers would be
increased.

The expansion would also

make room for the personnel
department and a computer
training facility currently
housed off-site at an annual cost
of $43,000.

As for the showers and lock-
ers: “We are trying to encour.
age staff to become less depe!
dent on autos. We'd like t cm
to bike, walk or jog to work,
and right now there’s no place

for them to shower,”
Mussatto.

“It's important | to have fit,
healthy employees.”

After the plans are reviewed
by the advisory design panel
and the advisory committee on
disability issues, the proposal
will be presented to council for
final review. Construction could
begin in March next year. -
