eed tae Pte de reg 4a- - Wednesday, October 11, 1965 ~ North Shore News BALLARD ANNOUNCEMENT Ce aqcvancin ANOTHER STEP toward putting Ballard zcro-emission fuel cells in tomorrow's car engines has been reached. By lan Noble News Reporter On Oct. 3, North Vancouver- based Ballard announced that a fuel cell has achieved the power density — described as power per weight and volume — required for use in an automobile, _ “This achievement exceeds the power density targets for a practi- cal fuel-cell powered vehicle set by auto manufacturers and the U.S. Department of Energy.’ said Ballard vice-president of technolo- gy Keith Prater. “Now that the power density goal has been achieved, Bullard's commercialization focus is on cost reduction and developing volume manufacturing processes for fuel cells.” he added, The fuel cell (which converts natural gas, methanol, or hydrogen fuel into electricity without com- bustion) was developed by Ballard and Germany's Daimler-Benz. The power density achieved by the fuel cell is more than five times that of earlier generation fuel celts used in Ballard's 1993 fuel cell bus and Benz's 1994 fuel cell van. The latest cell marks the high- est density achieved in proton exchange membrane fuel cells. The announcement was made in London, U.K., at the International Grove Fuel Cell Conference. ~The new monthly option from ICBC Are you buying short-term policies?
