The J.D. Power’s IQS was
based on survey results from over

~ 44,000 owners of 1994 new car
and truck models after they had
owned their vehicles for more than
90 days. .

The J.D. Power survey also
‘shows that American automakers
indeed are keeping their pace with
their Japanese rival makers. Out of
the 53 vehicles that achieved a top-
class defect rate of fewer that one
problern a car, 21 came form the
U.S. makers, 24 from Japanese,
and eight from the Europeans.

For the first time in five years,
the average level of quality for all
cars declined slightly over the pre-
vious year (less than three percent).
This year’s average is 1.1 problems
- per-vehicle.

another record this year by achiev-

LS400 sedan.

The second and third rankings
were also captured by Lexus mod-
els: GS 300 (0.48 defects per car)
and SC400 (0.52 per car).

J.D. Power gives awards to
North American plants credited
with manufacturing the highest
quality vehicles.

This year’s Gold Plant Quality
Award went to the Toyota plant in
Georgetown, Kentucky (for the
second time).

The Silver Plant Quality Award
went to two plants this year: the
General Motors/Toyota joint ven-
ture plant in Fremont, California,
and Ford’s St. Thomas plant in
Ontario. :
