have undertaken to hard-sell us a
highly suspect commodity: the ex-
altation.of minorities in the guise
_of public art,

"One wonders if the current
‘thrust of Artropolis did not origi-

~ nate from the recent legislation
governing the installation of public
art in Vancouver — legislation that

. promises substantial monetary

rewards to enterprising artists. In
that context Artropolis might have
become a means of advancing the
cause of the muititude of mostly
newly arrived artists who comprise
this exhibition.

‘While making relevant and real-
istic assertions about what in fact

constitutes public art — something:

only King Anderson’s slide show
attempted — it might have striven

* to showcase the best of what Van-

couver has to offer focal devel-
opers.

\nstead, it chose to celebrate the
cause of the marginalized and the
dispossessed in what is arguably
the most dour art exhibition
Western Canada is ever likely to
see.

The fact that art can never be
successfully straitjacketed will ob-
viously never deter people from
making the attempt. Art cannot
help but express individual or
group concerns because the expe-
rience of such concerns, like the
need to create art, is fundamental
to human nature.

To impose an agenda on it in the
name of “political correctness” is
