Some other fire statistics also showed improvement, but others worsen- ed. There were more fires and more injuries, but the total doilar losses and per capita loss per fire declin- ed while the number of fircs per 1,000 population remained the same at 2.38, B.C. Fire Commissioner Rick Dumala reports 7,455 fires occur- red in the province in 1990, ep from 7,280 in ‘the previous year. The number of persons injured in fires in 1990 was 464, compared with the previous year’s 387. The major cause of fires in one and - two-family dwellings was cooking accidents, responsible for 533 of the 1,962 such fires in B.C. last year. The second-largest cause was heating equipment, 410, down . from 450 in the previous year. Of the 51 fire deaths - the second-lowest number in B.C. in the last 10 years - 26 of the vic- tims were men, 20 were women and five were children. Seventeen of the fire fatalities involved per- sons over 60 years of age. Fire deaths from careless smok- ing, which had been declining in the late 1980s, took a turn for the worse in 1990. .
