Al Unser Jr. on
the art of racing

LAST YEAR, AI Unser Jr.won the inaugural Vancouver
indy car race en route to the 1990 series championship.

This season, the Albuquerque,
N.M., dr-ver will be seeking a se-
cond straight victory in the Sept. |
race through the streets of Van-
couver. Here are some of his
thoughts on the art of racing:

RACING

“Hf it ain’t fun, it ain’t worth
doing. It brings everybody dowa
if there’s no fun. The older I've
gotten, I’ve discovered that
whatever you’re doing, if you
wake up in the morning and

SPEED

“Once you get over 190 miles
per-hour, then it’s all pretty much
the same. I usuaily can’t feel the
speed jump... except at Indy in
1989 when I ran 220 for the first
time. The short straights between
Turns ft and 2, and 3 and 4, sud-
denly disappeared. I got from
Turn 1 to 2 so fast, it became just
one big corner.’’

SAFETY

‘““What really makes you a safe

driver is knowing the fine line be-

tween being aggressive and over-
ageressive. You have to be
ageressive if you wantto win races
and sometimes you have to be
over-aggressive to win. But there is
a fine line between the two. When
you're over-aggressive, you run
the risk of making a mistake.
That’s why I stay away from the
fast guys when [’m not running
fast. And when I’m running fast,
l expect that in return.’’
BOBBY RAHAL
“I couldn’t be part of a two-car
team with just anybody. Most
drivers are very, very selfish. And
to be successful you have to be.
But with Bobby, he just wants to
see the team win. That's being
very unselfish and that’s the way
it worked last year. As we ran
more races, we learned more
about each other and we began
working better and better with
each other.”
THE MEDIA
“Dad gave me some advice
about the media. He said, ‘Son,
you have to learn to shut up.’
Dad just says ‘yes’ or ‘no.’ Well,
T try to do the same in a way. !
answer with a ‘yes’ or a ‘no’ but
then go on to say what [ mean by
that.’”
LAST YEAR'S WINS
“I think it was unrealistic at the
beginning of last year to think
that we could win four races in a
row. If someone tofd me | would
do that at the start of last year, I
wouldn’t have believed them. But
1 knew I had the race team
capable of doing it. We worked
hard and my guys were behind
me. They prepared the car well
and made great pit stops.**
THE NO. 1 CAR
“Having the No. 1 on our car
means a [oi to the team. No. 1 is
hard to come by. You have to
work really hard and sacrifice for
that number. It was a tough eight
years to get it, but that’s the
number I want and I’m proud to
wear it for Galles-Kraco Racing.
The team earned it, that’s why the
car carries the number.”’
