their tempting red color.

Daphne x Burkwood ‘Somerset’
is a hybrid between d. caucasica
and d. cneorum. The plant com-
bines the beautiful flowering habit
of the rock daphne with the more
upright growth pattern of the
other.

This will be a difficult plant to
find, but if you do, you will be
well rewarded for your efforts. It
will produce masses of light pink,
fragrant flowers in April/May and
splashes of color for months on
after. The foliage is semi-
evergreen, so occasiona! shearing
immediately following the bloom-
ing period is required to keep it in
trim.

One of my personal favorites is
daphne odora ‘Aureo-Marginata’
which is the hardier form of d.
odora. Even so, this treasure
should be grown in a protected site

and afforded some extra precau-
tions during excessively cold
periods.

This evergseen variety has large,
narrowly oval, mid-green leaves,
each edged in cream. The red/
purple flowers which appear from
late winter to late spring are com-
paratively large and extremely
fragrant.

Another one of the major
reasons for the scarcity of these
plants is the objection to being
transplanted. If you already have
one in the yard and wish to move
it, be gentle. Damage to root can
cause root rot and failure. If you
are planting a new variety, disturb
roots as little as possible.

These could be difficult plants to
find but pursue them; there are
few plants that possess this much
potential to please. Indulge
yourself and your garden, get
something hard to get.
