28 - Friday, October 10, 1986 -~ North Shore News Univers ity speakers tackle all topics FROM THE feeding of babies to race ftelations in South Africa, University of British Columbia faculty are willing to speak to non-profit groups in the Lower Mainland on more than 750 dif- ferent topics. 12th YEAR The UBC Speakers Bureau, which is funded by the University and administered by the UBC Alumni Association, is preparing for the start of its 12th year of ser- vice to the community on September 2. In the past 11 years the bureau has arranged more than 3,000 speaking engagements for schools, senior citizen groups, preschools, professional associations, hospitals and other organizations. NO FEE Most of the speakers are UBC faculty members, with some com- munity volunteers and retired pro- fessors also willing to speak about their specialties and their hobbies. They demand no fee for talking to non-profit: groups, only their travelling expenses. Because of demands on speakers’ time, the Speakers Bureau cannot guarantee a particular speaker or topic will always be available. 750 TITLES The 1986-87 UBC Speakers Bureau poster lists more than 750 tides, under such general topic headings as Travel, Literature, Nutrition, Medicine and Com- puters. The talks available are both entertaining and fun including Collecting the World’s Worst Oil Paintings, What Your Handwrit- ing Reveals, Backpacking in B.C.; and serious and helpful; AJDS: The Newest Epidemic, Copitg with Stress, Social Services and Restraint.
