Entertainment. North Shore dining The possibilities are endless THE PROBLEM on the North Shore isn’t fin- ding a place to eat: it’s resisting the temptation to eal out every evening. The reason is the diversity — of size, style and food ~— of the restaurant scene across the region. Fueled by a local economy that sees the North Shore ranked near the top of any list of Canadian cities in terms of available disposal income, and by the continu- ing trend to eat meals away from home, the restaurant scene has flourished here for a number of years. Diners have found themselves faced with a sometimes bewildering array of old favorites and new din- ing rooms competing for their entertainment dollars. And while that has made it tough for new restaurants to prosper or even estabiish a foothold — some smaller eateries have disappeared within a week of opening — diners have benefitted from an active market. Even over the past several years, as the economy has prompted more and move people to tighten the purse Strings on discretionary spending, there has been much happening to local res: taurants. The growing interest in the unusual has resulted in the By NEWS STAFF opening of a number of outlets for non-traditional meals and North Shore diners can now, often within the space of a handful of blocks, treat themselves to Vietnamese, indian and Per- sian food, as well as the NORTH SHORE residents can find their pick of good eating — often within feet of each more familiar Chinese, Jap- anese and continental cuisine. The shaky shape of the economy, too, has prompted more of those finding themselves relying on their own wits for economic sur- segments of the dining public. Some specialize in lunches, others in the variety of ethnic foods and still others in providing quality meals in intimale surroun- dings. The new businesses in turn vival turning to the business have complemented the of serving food. The result established restaurants — of that is an increase in the and in some cases forced number of smaller-sized res- changes that have also benefitted the diner. Indications that the economy is beginning to improve ~— and the spill-over effects of such projects as Expo °86 — are expected to add to that diversity as witnessed by the recent openings of new res- taurants in the area. And all that adds up to good news — and cating. 51 - Friday, February 22, 1985 - North Shore News So... Have you heard about Tommy Africa’s New Menu?
