This week I have some

interesting information from
readers. First, a lady called

to tell me that she was happy
to read about the Prince
George cruise and was
throughly delighted with it.
She added, sadly, that the
P.G. was not anywhere near
full and hoped that people
would support this fine
Canadian ship. I do too.

If you are planning a visit
to California that will take
you through Redwood City,
another reader has a
restaurant tip. He visits the
city regularly as the ship he
serves on as Chief Engineer
picks up cargo there. The
restaurant is an inexpensive
family-oriented pizza parlor
called “The Captain’s Galley
Pizza and Pipes”.

Along with quite com-
mendable meals, the Galley
dishes up magnificent en-
tertainment by way of an
enormous pipe organ. Built
in 1926, the instrument
consists of 26 racks of pipes
which he assures me
produce some marvellous
sounds. The organ is only in
use Thursday, Friday,
Saturday and Sunday, with
the best organist in charge
on Saturday and Sunday. If I
were heading South with a
carload of kids, I'd be in-
clined to schedule an
overnight stop in Redwood
City.

edit a bit for length. If any of
you are fortunate enough to

visit the Cook Islands, she
has some good tips. Also, if

restaurant called Avarua,
run by a German fellow with
a Philippine cook.

The native women wear
crowns of scented flowers,
“tiaras” similar to Tahiti.
They also wear a colorful
cotton sari tucked around. I
tried tying one around
myself but it droped off.
(Barbara's note: I had the
same trouble with my Fijiian
“sulu” — but I brought it
home and my _ eldest
daugherr has the knack of
twisting it just so. She could
wear it through a hurricane.)

Across the road from our
little hotel is a European-
style pub called the
Outrigger, run by an
Englishman married to a
local lady. Look for the
authentic carving of a Tiki
god, suitably draped. Since
it’s a fertility god, you will
understand the drapery.

The food at the pub is very
good, usually two dishes.
One is fish, freshly caught by
the owner, either ono or aki,
and the other‘ ‘dish is either
chicken or beef. All served

Another reader called to
tell me that they took the 12-
hour excursion to Inuvik,
organized by Gulliver’s
Travel in Vancouver. She
was quite disappointed,
although she was glad that
she'd tried it. Visiting
Canada’s far North isn't easy
— a remarkable lack of
“rent-an-igloo”. The trip
included an Arctic
dinner, served on board the
plane and a bus tour of
Inuvik.

She had hoped to do some
shopping there but found the

prices absurd. Imagine $80.

for a tiny pair of kiddies’
mocassins!

She also felt tht the price
should have included
complimentary drinks
aboard the aircraft, “Not
that we wanted a lot to
drink, but it made me mad to
have to pay for them.”

No ‘moderation’ for alcoholics

SAN DIEGO (UPI) — A 10-

year-old experiment to
transform 20 alcoholics into
social drinkers - considered
a breakthrough in
alcoholism treatment - is a
failure. Four died of liquor-
related causes and only one
is a “controlled” drinker.

“If there are such things as
alcoholics doing controlled
drinking, they are so rare we
could not find them in this
study, and the dangers and
risks involved are so great
anyone would be a fool to try
it,” said Dr. Mary Pendary, a
psychologist on the staffs of
UCSD School of Medicine
and ‘the Veterans Ad-
ministration Medical Center.

Ms. Pendary, who called
