ARSON and suspected arsons continued to be by far the greatest causes of fires in North Vancouver City last year, accounting for 76 fires. The annual report of North Van City Fire Department shows arson to be by far the greatest single cause of fires in the municipality during 1981, with more than 2 times the number of incidents of the second greatest cause — unattended cooking equipment — which ac- counted for 29 fires. In his report, Fire Chief Dick Hallaway states that the month of January 198! - alone saw ceight cars deliberately set on fire. The toll was repeated in January this year, with eight vehicles and one truck canopy being torched in five arson incidents which oc- curred in underground parking lots in the City. The fire chief adds in his report: “Appeals have~been made to residents to report any suspicious occurrences to the RCMP or ourselves but have failed to help stop this wanton destruction of property.” In total though, 1981 saw a decrease in fire calls — 570 for the year, which was 41 less than in 1980. Total fire loss of $569,810 was also “considerably lower’’, Hallaway reports. Of that damage figure, 48 per cent was accounted for * by just four fires — the $100,000 conveyor belt blaze at Neptune Terminals, a $69,100 house fire at 1807 Rufus, $64,000 in damages at Venice Bakery and $41,000 at an apartment at 170 East Fifth Street. FIRE DEATHS However, the year saw two deaths as a result of City fires and injuries to four civilians. False alarms continue to account for more than half the calls to the fire depart- ment. Hallaway states that the 278 accidental alarms last year can be attributed,to some degree, to the sen- sitivity of complex fire systems installed in various buildings in the City. A further 17 false alarms were deliberate classified as malicious. and Much of the department's work comprised emergencies which were unrelated to fires. The rescue and safety vehicle answered 510 calls — an increase of 27 on the previous year. Crews also responded to 536 medical calls in a backup role to the ambulance service and were asked to transport 42 patients by ambulance. Hallaway notes in_ his report that definite plans have now been formulated by the emergency health service to station advanced life support teams on the North Shore early this year, which will be available on a 24-hour basis. The fire chief takes Al3 - Wednesday, March 3, 1982 - North Shore News Arson the major fire cause in N.Van City satisfaction in reporting that time loss injuries for the department over the year was “remarkably low”, with. only six reports filed with the Workers’ Compensation Board for injuries, resulting in a loss of just eight shifts. The department is looking forward to June this year for the delivery of a new $147,500 diesel Hendrickson pumper truck which will replace a 1955 LaFrance scheduled for to the North pumper ‘fetirement Shore Museum.
