This is a ' topic. about which the: city treasurer, is understandably “edgy, since, according to my information, they shot up by 10% this year in the city but only 1% % in the district. Since the majority of ‘ school district taxpayers live . in the District of North Van, my figure of $76 decrease _ would seem to be about _ average. © I should ‘point out that, while trustees have some control over the mill rate, we have none at all. over “assessments. I might also -add that any increase in assessment automatically ensures that the ‘burden of school tax is shifted from the ' provincial government onto . the local taxpayer. I note that of all .the available, your reporter was only able to contact a representative of the Concerned Citizens’ Association. Incidentally, ' the letter sent to taxpayers was. read beforehand by Trustee Craig, and he ap- peared to think it quite all right at that°time. Since it Dear Editor: —— J read the article’ in Sunday News and I was shocked to hear that the Recreation Commission was going to close the wading pool in Mahon Park. I feel it is an outrageous action to take. I do not see any reason for this drastic move. I am a day care mother looking after 4 small Fund raising thanks school taxes message was no ‘goo! ‘school tax. It stated clearly . went out he has developed: some reservations, including my. use of the term ‘judicious’ as. applied to the board's budgeting. Citizens should recall that the Concerned Citizens’ approch to judicious budgeting last year was to demand a slash of. 10%; ignoring the results of in- flation, which. would have resulted in a reduction of about 18% in the services - offered to students in’ this district. It would seem that judicious budgeting in their terms is solely concerned with reducing taxes, and shows no concern whatever _ for kids. On another matter, your reporter quotes Craig as claiming that we have run out of teachers on temporary contracts and will now have to begin firing those on continuing contracts. The claim is not quite true. It is true that when enrollment began to decline, we adopted the practice of awarding temporary. con- tracts to new teachers for their first couple of years, on the grounds that the delcine Some might want to PAY for wadin pool is very important to me and I use it a lot, along with many other mothers, especially those who live in apartment buildings and use the park facilities a lot. All positions so terminated were temporary and we have reluctantly let go many fine and energetic younger teachers. I used the word ‘judicious’ ~. in my letter for. a very good. reason. It implies an, exercise in judgement. In my opinion, the board over the . past few years has shown judgement in reducing and “numbers of teachers, ad- . ministrators and aides in proportion to the decline in™ enroliment, and this. has ‘been reflected in your mill | rate. We need that pool Linda Gardner, NorthVancouver from Cancer Society Dear Editor: I would like to express the sincere thanks of the Canadian Cancer Society's West Van Unit for all the support received in the 1979 Fund Drive. The target set for West Van this year was $45,000. Due fo help received from individuals and organizations such as your newspaper the Unit was, able to overshoot this target by $3500 for a total of $48;500. West Vancouver businesses — including Horseshoe Bay — _ con- tributed $1,850 to this total, the ather $46,650 was aN donated in the residential and apartment areas in- cluding Lions Bay and Bowen Island. And $5,580 of the total was mailed in by con- tributors absent when canvassers called. A great deal of credit is due the cight area chairmen and the 51 zone captains who supervised the cam- paign and to their 600 canvassers for their faithful persistence in covering every home. But much credit must also go to the residents of West Vancouver for the gencrous way in which they supported the drive this year. Others who assisted in the work in various ways helping to make the campaign a success were Mayor Derrick Humphreys, patron of the campaign, the churches of West Vancouver, the West Van Rec Centre, the West Van Memorial Library and the West Van Furniture Store. The support demonstrated by the community has been very gratifying and a source of encouragement to all those connected with the society. J.
