The venerable 10,168 square-foot heritage house has been a tixture on the city’s 300 block of East 2nd Street since 1904. In recent vears ir has once again begun to show its age. Its most recent tenant was an ill-fated restaurant that closed its doors almost a year ago. Six months later concerned city councillors instructed the municipality's staff to ger a feel for the market's attitude toward the site. “What we are doing is we have advertised for expressions of interest,” said the city’s Margo MacFadyen, “in cither leasing or buving the prop- rthac end the city has held three open houses over the past month at the site. Approximately 40 parties showed up to have a first-hand look. “Ithas been quite interesting the number of people that have come,” said MacFadyen. One of the individuals who went through the city-owned building was none other than Nick Vavaris. Although Va- better known for his epic ongoing «struggle with various government bodies to attempt to secure a pub licence for his current East Esplanade restaurant, he teets a strong bond with the aging structure. In 1980 Vavaris, then a si ssful restaurateur in the city, mace a deal with councillors to bring the place up to snuff and run a restaurant ther He bept his side of the bargain, but higher powers dealt him a blow he would not recover from.
