WHO TO CALL: Fashion Editor Layne Christensen 985-2131 (118) LOR TIE OU’VE SEEN them: those obvious dressing blunders in which you wonder what type of fashion message the wearer is attempting to convey. ' Carol Crenna pntributing Writer The first few seconds upon meeting someone establishes your message, whether it intrigues, presses or goes unnoticed. And for many people in the course of a day, those few seconds are all At is allowed to represent yourself either positively or negatively. This doesn’t mean you should be working to dnpress, but to express. Whether they are mismatching, ill-fitting, inappropriate or untidy, se little fashion fatx pas may be seen as a form of apathy or lack caring for the details in your life. They often have nothing to with dressing as a means of self-expression or personal Fle and usually don’t flatter the wearer. We are not including silly fads and get-on-the-band- @ won trends that have their place in today’s fashion rid and are therefore forgivable. We also do not refer those very rare occasions when a stylish woman es an obvious blunder. Everyone makes mis- es, and when an ordinarily stylish woman makes me she is given the benefit of the doubt. It is seen an interesting idiosyncrasy rather than as cloth- = incompetence. . . | Here « are pet peeves “from five fashionable Shore women who nun their own consulting public relations. firms. She fcels that any clothes that are too provocative, including tight pants, low necklines and other styles “with that come-hither look” ure totally inappropriate. Gadsby says she does not like when women feel limited to clothing that is designed for a par- ticular age, especially older women. “Some of the old-fashioned taboos of what to wear and what not to wear are out,” she says. “A woman can wear whatever she wants as long as it suits her figure and fifestyle. There are many older women who wear youthful styles and look great in them.” ooo Kelly Millin, president of The Real Solution Marketing Group Inc. has worked with shopping malls, restaurants and fashion companies. Millin states that it doesn’t matter what business women are in. “Melrose Place-styled office wear” with really short, tight suits don't cut it. It doesn’t matter whether they have the legs for it or not. She says that even though the big trend in hosiery is toward ultra- sheerness, they shouldn’t be so sheer that they don’t cover child- hood scars on a woman's shins or reveal discoloration on her legs. On both men and women she dislikes seeing the com- mon faux pas of pants that are either too long or too short for the heels worn. Also, neglected shoes are a fashion foibie. Not wearing hats bothers Millin, too. She feels. that women don’t recognize the impact that a hat has to fin- ish an outfit and make a woman look smart. Millin also notes that a woman’s hairstyle can ruin an outfit if it’s a shag in the growing-out stage. If it looks shapeless, it should be blunt cut. ene Louise Aird, is a treelunce writer and a public rela- tions consultant for the hospitality industry, knows what she likes and dislikes, She lists wearing sockettes with skirts'as a definite no-no, as well as wearing open-toed shoes in winter. She's opposed to genuine fur because she says the mild West Coast climate makes its wear unnecessary. Aird frowns upon a coat that doesn’t go with the outfit, such as a trench coat with an evening gown. Also hitting a bad note are shoes that are worn simply because “ the wearer wanted to show them off even if they don’t match the rest of the outfit. Aird dislikes hair goofs including helmet hair (too much hair spray and over-styled), and roots that aren’t the same color as.the hair. She also says that . women should only wear short sleeves if they have firm arms with good skin, and Graphic Carol Crenna Dackless styles if they have a nice back.
