NORTH SHORE ‘SCENES By Dorothy Foster The stern expressions of the grouping in the sketch is reminis- cent of the old-fashioned family photographs: from the turn of the century. These are some of the bears that were on display during the summer in a showcase at Capilano Library in North Vancouver. They have toured several Lower Mainland libraries since, but have returned to the North Vancouver Library for the month of December. _ “The woman responsible for set- ting up this display is’ Candy ~ Milliard of North Vancouver. «Along with Laura Mah and _ Laurie Speirdle, she has been - sewing, stuffing, dressing and dec- “ orating teddy bears for the past 2h years as a part-time job, : They have created a catalogue of, five bear patterns and, as a _group, they represent eight people who-make bear patterns and call ‘themselves The Great Canadian Bear Pattern Company. - Their catalogue pattern. books -are now distributed ii Canada, the . United States and, more’ recently, . England. “The history, of the teddy bear is Most interesting. -. It goes back to-around 1902 in ‘the United States and the American _.. president of the era, Theodore , Roosevelt. - “At that time he was taking part ‘in the negotiations of a boundary “dispute - between ‘Louisiana and _ Mississippi. Knowing that the president was an avid hunter, . a. bear. hunt. was ° ‘planned, and he was to make the ‘decisive shot to kill the bear. > The bear, it turned out, was old, “injured and tied up. The president _, tefused to shoot it or to let anyone : . else fire a shot.” ‘A’ political cartoonist, Clifford ~ Berryman, took advantage of the ‘situation and showed the president ‘with his hands up ‘saying, “here 40 fy om Ale abe WA cee a wa S Byun ER ruenert ae eares Hag EON ISSR Ya RAR a ae Nas N ayy ‘4 mo st EROS SAGE RAET EGA TS URN GE LEE AVY BENE ITI ES SR, Ms Pn Dorothy Foster TEDDY BEARS, on display at the Capilano Branch of the North Vancouver District Library (Edgemont Village). and no further,” which also related to the boundary dispute. The more the artist drew this cartoon, the smaller became. Until his final rendering in the Washington Post showed the bear as a trembling bear cub tied to a tree with the president holding everyone off. A New York store owner and his wife made 4 black button eyes and stuffed it with wood shavings. They placed .it' in their ‘store window along with the . cartoon from the paper, and said that this” was Teddy’s Bear. it received. sa much attention that the store owner wrote a letter to the president requesting the use of his name for Teddy's Bears. Thus the name Teddy Bear. .came into being and became a SANTASH Q)ogorF| LARGE SKULLS A fas shown) the bear - smal! plush bear with | world-wide infatuation with these . cuddly stuffed toys that one can never grow too old to own.
