Young, my husband was

naminated by the
-Academy of Motion Picture
Arts and Sciences in the
sound category for
Unforgiven, Warner Bros.
invited us to Hollywood to
attend three nights of cele-
brations and the gala
evening at the Dorothy
Chandler Pavilion.

The excitement began the day
“his nomination was announced
but it wasn’t until the morning of
our departure for Los Angeles
that we got a taste of what was in
store for us,

At seven that morning BCTV
called and asked if a film crew
could come over and record
‘some pre-Oscar excitement. An

‘hour later, two news people
arrived, set up a camera and told
the family to act natural: | left to
walk the children to school.
When I returned, Rob, the news
woman and the cameraman were
in our bedroom. Rob, in only his
boxer shorts and tuxedo shirt
with Daffy and Donald embroi-
dered on one side, was chatter-
ing away naturally. The woman

told me to look admiringly at
Rob. The Looney Tunes emblem,
I felt, said it all. During his televi-
sion debut, CFMI radio called
and wanted a live interview in
two minutes. The film crew shot
Rob talking on the telephone.

Three hours later, they left and
we had just enough time to catch
our first, first-class flight to Los
Angeles. We were met by a
young man holding a sign with
Rob‘’s name, who took charge of
our luggage, and ushered us out-
side to a limousine. From that
moment, | felt like | was ina
movie. Our driver told us that he
was an actor waiting for his big
break: he had an agreement with
Warner Bros. that allowed him
time off when he got an acting
jcb. He droned on until we
arrived at the Four Seasons
Beverly Hills and remembering
his present occupation, he direct-
ed us to the front desk.

An hour later, we left fora
party at the Bel Air home of the
president of Warner Bros. A
young woman greeted us at the
front door, asked us to pause
beside signed sketches by
Picasso and Matisse while a pho-
tographer took our picture, and
then led us into a crowded living
room. There was not one familiar
face. We continued onto the
patio where | recognized the
actors — Richard Harris wancler-
ing with a little dog in his arms,
