This only works in the music's favor, particulasly with the Sonata for Violin and Piano, Op.94a which was produced a year after he original flute and piano version remiered in 1943. But this first selection also fore- shadows a weakness of execution inherent to the entire disc. °° Both Landsman and Durand are facile in their perforrmances, but they have great difficulty maintain- “ing a reliable balance. Durand’s keyboard is the main culprit bere, waxing and waning as it does, no doubt to the music's dictates, but often hectoring Land- smair’s far fess dynamic lead. ~ Unfortunately there is another, smaller complaint that will also keep this recording out of my top 10 — a subtle but inescapable vibrate in Landsman’s sustained bowing which grows more con- spicuous once noted.
