Oftentimes, you end up feeling dependent on other people, and that can be uncomfortable. You also have to deal with the fact that the automobile, like it or not, remains something of a status symbol within our society. Saying ‘‘] don’t have a car"’ is still likely to be met with an unspoken ‘*Why not?”’ cr **Poor thing, times must be tough.”” For many people, especially those who rely on status images to create their persona! and profes- sional identity, these aren’t very pleasant feelings. {t’s much easier to avoid them by keeping their cars on the road. While I was concerned about experiencing a lack of in- dependence without a car, I have so far found that in some ways I feel even more independent when Pm walking or busing. Nothing keeps me tied to a par- ticular parking lot, and | can wander farther afield without worrying about the meter coming due. 1 can cut through parks, back lanes and bushes that are inac- cessible in a car, and it’s easier to visit various destinations on your route without having to circle about looking for a new parking space at cach stop. If you want to test the waters of the car-free jife, try leaving your auto at home even just one day a week. Remember, if vehicle emis- sions were reduced by just 10% in Vancouver, it would be more beneficial to our air quality than shutting down all local industry. The Greater Vancouver Regional District (GVRD) is cur- rently working on an Air Quality Management Plan that is the first of its kind in Canada. If you would like to comment on methods of improving our air quality, call the GVRD’s Let’s Clear the Air Information Line at 436-6750.
