We don’t give much thought to
our animal heritage. Yet, since we
first evolved, we have spent 99%
of our history as predators,

selected by our very own nature - |;

for prowess at hunting big-game
like the gazelle,
wildebeest, horse and mastodon.

We have arms built for throw.
ing rocks and spears, legs made
for long-distance tracking, and
minds equipped to plan, await,
and believe in success.

I refer to the “‘go-getter,’” who

leaves the den (or home) with the ~

simple conviction that “‘prey’’ is
out there somewhere, and he or
she will be the one to catch it.
Our prejudice toward optimism
immediately heips us take advan-
tage of unforeseen opportunity --
if we are looking far it, a good
deal may blunder right up to us.

When the first bet on the future
pays off and prey is sighted, we
are no richer; we must pursue. We
draw on reserves of guile and
energy, even though the odds of
““failure’’ seem great. ‘

consultant for. your business,
company or corporation, I would
remind you that cheetahs fail. to
catch their prey nine chases out of
10, on. average. A cheetah prone
to despair, who failed to give each

and go extinct, instead of catching
the 10th gazelle that makes his/
her business profitable. :

As modera and logical as we
think we are, our minds teem with
non-verbal insights, hunches and
feelings that we cannot justify in
words. Many arise in the more
ancient parts of our brains which
govern fighting, eating, mating
and pursuit.

We don’t yet know how we
know things. It is untikely that
pure logic, born in the fluorescent
light of classroom decision mak-
ing, will ever replace instinctive
business ‘“‘savvy.”’

What allows you to be “‘tucky”*
and successful? Something you al-
ready know: Life is good and
great things are possible. This 2t-
titude allows luck to be useful
when it arrives.
