2 ee Att i lee a MalILBox End chemical warfare on fields Dear Editor: Residents of North Vancouver have every right to protest against the spraying of school playing fields with herbicides (North Shore News, July 23). The North Vancouver School Board should stop all further ap- Plication of herbicides for weed control. There are other methods of control besides chemical war- fare. : Many chemicals have entered our lives without a proper assess- ment. The use of herbicides very often contributes to indocr pollu- tion; weed killers, pesticides and fertilizers are carried into the AV residents were inadequately warned Dear Editor: I wish to add an important point to the July 23 article Spraying at schools riles NV residents. Residents | were inadequately warned that the spraying was about to take place. Many families with small children use the park area and playing field adjacent to Plymouth School as the local piayground, We are in the park most every day, year round. Although four signs presumably were placed around entrances to the playing field on Saturday, July 15, only one remained on Monday, vty 17, when a neighbor finally noticed it and brought it to the at- tention of the parents. The spray- ing took place the next day. One other sign could be found, lying on the ground beside another entrance to the playing field. There was not a trace of the other two signs. I experienced the same situation last year, when my first notice of the spraying was encountering the truck in the park the morning the spraying was done. According to Mr. Bodnar, District 44’s director of building - and grounds, the district complies with the notice required by the Ministry of Environment. It is not obliged to post notice in the news- paper or use any other method of notification. So the problem remains of ade- quately warning residents of im- pending herbicide spraying, in- cluding protecting signs from removal by van Grace Makarewicz North Vancouver | Feature Special Assorted Hot House PEPPERS house by feet and clothing. The chemistry of herbicidal activity is not completely understood and the level of toxicity depends upon many factors. Children and the elderly are susceptible to such chemicals, and their absorption into the body . through the skin and lungs is a health hazard. The use of her- bicides, insecticides and chemical grass fertilizers lead to the in- troduction of toxic chemicals into ground water, land and ultimately into the food chain. The biochemical aspects of en- vironmental pollutants are not ful- ly understood and the terms ‘‘tox- ic’ and “non-toxic”? should te carefully analyzed. In closing, I would like to coim- mend the North Shore News for frequently addressing the questions of toxic chemicals and other prob- lems related to the environment and for raising public awareness.
