City traffic lights turned AFTER BEING concealed ir hooded quietude for some weeks, the new $50,000 conglomeration of traffic lights at the corner of 23rd Street, Larson Road and Jones Avenue are in operation. By MAUREEN CURTIS Contributing Writer Although new traffic signals are customarily hooded for a few days before being turned on, according to North Vancouver Deputy City Engineer Don Bridgman, there has been a further delay that was due to problems in obtaining a B.C. Hydro connection. The lights were turned on to a flash setting on the weekend, as required, and were scheduled to begin full operation Tuesday. City staff have been looking into installing the lights at the five- corner intersection for about five years, although there were surpris- ingly few traffic problems at the site unti} recently. “There weren’t that many acci- dents,’’ said Bridgman. ‘‘People were 2 little scared at that intersec- tion so they tended to be on their best behavior and take turns." However, about six months ago, city staff noticed an attitudinal change at the intersection, with the result that the number of accidents shot up. “There was a greater incidence of two or three cars from one cor- ner tailgaiting through the in- tersection, which is not only unex- pected, but got tempers up,’’ he said Engineering staff spent some time working out the various lighting sequences that will be in effect at different times at the in- tersection. The lights will be traffic ac- tivated and when al! corners have vehicles at them, a predetermined cycle will go into effect. Alternate cycles will be in use when the intersection is not ‘fully loaded.”” Bridgman said the new traffic lights will speed things up during rush-hour periods and instill more of a sense of safety during the quiet night-time hours when drivers have a tendency to “drift through’’ the intersection. But somewhat more of a delay may be noticed at other times of the day. “There will also be'a significant improvement in safety for the pe- destrian,”’ said Bridgman, noting thar some of the signals are button activated for those on foot.
