4. Wednesday, Maret 300) 1OX8 North Shore News MAILBOX GRAND BOULEVARD PARK Preserve land for future generati Ons Dear Editor: The following proposal has been put before the City of North Van- couver aldermanic council on numerous occasions by concerned citizens. Namely, | am referring to the attempt by a large number of people to have the section of forest, extending from the base of 23rd) Street hill and Ridgeway Avenue along Grand Boulevard, dedicated as park land. The impetus far this stand was taken many years before recent at- tempts by concerned citizens, and most recently the Court) House Area Residents Association of which | am a member, were mace to save this Jand from housing development. In 1912, Block 220 A was pur- chased by the City of North Van- couver with taxpayers’ money for the sum of $34,000 with the intent that this greenspace would be set aside as park. Surely the present council should not renege on a promise and commitment which has its roots in the very carly part of this century. The public has been quite vocal with petitions, representations and Setters urging comncil over the years to dedicate this land. A steady crasion has taken place in respect to land which could have served as park over recent years. The Tempe Crescent denudement is a prime example of how im- proper forest management is car- cied on in this city. It is time this community began to preserve land and set aside such woodland for the sake of (future generations. Sidney A. Waite North Vancouver NVD school ‘doubletatk’ wears thin Dear Editor: While the Ministry of Educa- tion, School Board #44 and the District of North Vancouver con- tinue to dance around each other on the issue of rezoning the land required for the replacement of Burrard View School, our children must attend this dilapidated school. As a parent and taxpayer, } am disgusted, outraged and afraid for my children's safety. The bureaucratic doubletalk and = ex- cuses on all levels are beginning to wear very thin, especially since everyone is far too busy pointing their fingers at each other instead of communicating to resolve the problem. Since | doubt any of these peo- ple plan on being more responsi- ble, I intend to solve my problem by moving my children to Sher- wood Park or Indian River as soon as classroom space is available. CARS * & MINI PICKUPS Speak up for the overpass Dear Editor: Congratulations to Angus Ree for listening to his voters and tak- PS ing a firm stand in support of the RSSICON 22 Lonsdale Avenue overpass. 18 MOIS DE The congestion and delays caus- pesightite ed by the Upper Levels Highway at Lonsdale and, Westview intersec- tions affect ‘a great many of the drivers who tive on the North Shore. For over a decade our Sacred . MOIS DE government has promised the GARANTIE SOUS North Shore voters a solution to CONDITIONS the growing congestion caused by NOOR the Upper Levels Highway. Since Ti 1985 very little work has been done on the project, yet the signs pro- claiming ‘Highway Improvement’”’ stand proudly in recognition of the Socreds. It appears that once again North Shore drivers will have to endure delays while the Ministry of High- ways debates the amount of money to spend on the Squamish and Co- quihalla highways. In order to get the Lonsdale overpass on the 1988-89 budget, Angus Ree needs the strong vocal support of fellow MLAs Jack Davis and John Reynolds as well as municipal governments. I urge all drivers on the North Shore to contact their elected rep- resentatives and solicit their im- mediate support for this project and the original nine-month schedule. If we do not speak up now, we will experience three or four addi- tional years of congestion, delays and frustration. M.
