THE OLD FOX RETURNS

Hinton’

ONE OF the most popular
players to wear the
Whitecaps uniform, Alan
Old Fox’ Hinton returns to
the scene of his soccer suc-
cesses as a player-coach back
in 1978.

Hinton, 42, earned the
nickname with his coolly-
calculated kicks from corners
and set pieces that resulted in
many goals.

Although not expected to
play at all that season, Hin-
ton went on to appear in 29
of the club's 30 games, set-
tung a league record which
sul stands of 30 assists.

Following his play here he
was wooed by many NASI
clubs tor a head-coaching
post, settling on ap offer
from Tulsa Rouglinecks. He
took the team to the national
Conference semi-finals,
drawing record playoff
crowds. Hinton left the
Roughnecks to join the Seat-
tle Sounders in 1980, earning
instant success.

His first season in Seattle
