8 - Sunday, November 11 , 1990 - North Shore News Municipalities compete for lowest energy use rating i NORTH SHORE municipalities and residents are putting a lot of energy into helping promote BC Hydro’s Power Smart month. By Peggy Trendeli-Whittaker News Reporter North Vancouver City and the districts of North and West Van- couver are battling head-to-head to see which municipality can conserve the most energy. And all North Shore residents, along with other British Coiumbians, are be- ing asked to turn off all unneces- sary lights at 8 p.m. on Wednes- day, Nov. 14, for at least one hour, so BC Hydro can measure the resulting drop in energy re- quirements. The energy consumption of the public buildings chosen to repre- sent each municipality in the North Shore Power Smart Challenge is currently being measured, and BC Hydro techni- cians are doing energy audits of each building to find ways for oc- cupants to increase their energy savings. From Nov. 14 to 30, energy consumption will be monitored again, with points going to the municipality that most decreases its energy usage. Points are also being awarded for each municipality’s promotion of the Power Smart message and their adoption of Hydro’s Municipal Energy Efficiency Poli- cy — a step that’s already been taken by North Vancouver City. B.C. residents are being asked to shut off all un- necessary lights at 8 p.m. on the evening of Wednesday, Nov. 14, as BC Hydro Power Smart project manager and North Van- couver resident Blair Yrousdell demonstrates. BC Hydro has declared November Power Smart month and expects the one- evening conservation effort will save one million kilowatt hours, enough electricity to power 100 homes for a year. The three North Shore municipalities are also participating this month in the North Shore Power Smart challenge to prove who's the feader in energy conservation.
