Pesticide Control Appeal Board will © be deciding near the end of April whether poison will be used by the Fish and Wildlife Branch for the killing of wolves and coyotes. The Association for the Protection of Fur-Bearing Animals, along with other groups and individuals, presented our case against the use of the cruel 1080 The management unit 2.8 which extends generally from Squamish to Harrison Hot Springs including most of the permit. M.U. 2.8 is an area North Shore > where poison could possibly be used during the proposed 5 year length of the permit. There are clearly some conditions which must be met before poison can be used. (e.g. - harrassment of livestock, and the fact that Compound 1080 would not be used closer than 1 km. of a person’s dwelling, etc., etc.) Many dangers, however, are still involved. If this permit is allowed, the public should try to. ascertain precisely where in M.U. 2.8 For the B.C. government to simply say “East of Van- couver” is not ¢nough. ; Compound 1080 was used in the Pitt Polder area in 1977-78 and indeed some of the poison bait was “reported stolen” according to the Fish and Wildiife Branch. 1080 was also used in parts of Mission and Agassiz. The district of Coquitlam has already asked the Appeal Board to exempt the Burke Mountain area from the poison permit because of the number of hikers, pets, etc. that frequent the area. We commend that municipality for its concern. - We hope that all municipalities in the province will be told if Poison is allowed within their jurisdictions. We believe that the elected representatives in the area should be able to decide whether a private landowner fossg eae can or cannot allow the Fish and Wildlife Branch to set out poison baits on his land. At least the municipalities should be told of the use of poison baits within their areas. It was very surprising for us to discover that ao newspaper ads were inserted by the Pesticides Branch to inform the public of the use of this poison Compound 1080. (1080 is particularly lethal to dogs and there is no antidote.) Shouldn't the people of Prince George, Kamloops, Salmon Arm, etc., etc. be notified that they could have appealed the Pesticide Permit? The last date for registering appeals was ia Park criticism ‘unfounded’ on repose to the article printed in your paper about Lynn Canyon Park on Mar. 26/80, we are sending this rebuttal. - Lynn Canyon Park is a public park. I wonder if Mr. Murraygreen has ever ventured out of the Lynn Valley area to see for himself that these problems cxist m many other parks and public is hard to keep a park of this size free of debris, liquor and noise without the help of truly concerned citizens. As caretakers, we caa inform the public that drinking is illegal in this park only alternative is to phone the police each time this law is broken which ['m sure they'll appreciate. This problem ts not only with the youth but also families and picnickers. As for the loud music, we can ask for it to be turned down but we can't do it for them. If we did then we would be breaking the law. Mr. Murraygreen, have you ever followed the fine - example of many of our unpaid park nacighbors and stopped to pick up the trash and put it in the many garbage cans placed throughoot the park or just stepped over it in your haste Dear Editor: A concept to consider: Referring to the absurd situation of East and West Pakistan, to visualize what will become of the Dominion of Canada, if the Quebec Referendum becomes fact.
