i north shore news NS Cougars win firs Coach praises team spirit ‘A remarkable group of. young men’ is the way head coach Bill Bowes described his North Shore Cougars this week after the young clubs first win of the season on Saturday. After losing six straight games the Cougars, who, according to Bowes, have never been out of any of the games they have lost, nailed Surrey Rams by ai 20-7 count. With 32 of the 40 man roster only 19 years of age, the Junior Big Four squad finally put it all together with as much desire as skill, Cougar touchdowns came on a pair of passes by ew Quarterback Bill Biles to Gordon Rough and Perry Mazzone. Mazzone also picked up two converts and a pair of field goals for a 14 point afternoon. Defensively the Cougars didn't let up. Behind the work of linebacker James Patterson, the North Shore squad picked up four in- terceptions and six sacks in the hard hitting game. Patterson, who is described by Bowes, as an ‘exceptional young man’ was responsible for two of the sacks and also knocked down a pair of Surrey pass attempts. Bowes is high on all his players and coaching staff. i He is proud of the way his team hung together after the first six losses of the season and of the big turnout of. players for the practices apd games. Divers bac North Vancouver Diving Club is back in action after a very successful 78-79 season. Danielle Heinrich, Karen Watson and Brian Wood- cock were all Provincial Age Group Champions while Tracey Nimmon and Karen Watson competed in the Canadian Nationals, where Karen was a finalist in Girls 10 and under springboard. All four also made the Provincial Team to the Canadian Western Cham- pionship in diving. The Cougars will be taking on Richmond at Empire Stadium on Sunday at six p-m., and then in two weeks they will be at home (Kinsmen Stadium) to Victoria. in action The club is coached by Gun” QOdegard a_ former Swedish National Team member.
