You can’t get it off a doorknob or a toilet seat. You can’t get it ina swimming pool. You can’t get it from sitting next to a person with AIDS, or, under normal conditions, from working in the same office or even living in the same house. You can't even get it from their sweat, their saliva or their sneezes. No one has. Of the more than 12,000 cases in North America, there is not a single demonstrated case of AIDS being transmitted in any of the ways I've mentioned. In fact, epidemiologists don’t even classify AIDS as a con- tagious disease. Infectious, yes - but only through the exchange of body fluids such as blood and semen. While the virus thought to cause AIDS has been found in saliva and tears, it is not transmitted chat way. Even health-care workers who have punctured their fingers with needics and been ex- posed to the blood of AIDS patients have not been found to be infected, : The good news - if there is any in this tragic epidemic - is that AIDS is not going to wildly infect those who take simple precautions and stick to safe-sex guidelines. That is not good enough, of course, for those who wish to use the disease as an excuse for homophobia. Curiously, they recommend that only homosexuals be publicly identified or quarantined; they omit he- mophiliacs, those who have had blood transfusions, and those in other risk groups. At the moment, we have only two tools with which to fight AEDS: education and compassion. The epidemic will only be prolonged by those who choose to spread ignorance and fear. We don’t have time for that. Bob Tivey Project Director AIDS Vancouver West Van inaction not understandable Dear Editor: That West Vancouver Ci- ty council won't pass serious” laws restricting dogs, and that it will provide only token enforcement of the feeble laws in place, I quite ‘understand .— criticism is hard to take, and the criti- cism from dog owners who need parks and playgrounds , as lavatories for their dogs is Sunkist Valencia Med. Lubomir S. Prytutak West Vancouver Hatred leads to trouble Dear Editor: I was appalled at the at- titude of Mr. Collins in his column about immigration. What makes Canada such an interesting country is the variety of cultures. 1, for one, welcome these im- migrants for they can teach us what they know, and vice-versa. Mr. Collins citicized Otto Lang's ideas that a popula- tion increase would create labor, by saying that the American South sowed the seeds of future social disaster by encouraging the slave trade. This is an absurd comparison to the situation in Canada.
