Twins place fourth in championships THE NORTH Shore Twins wrap- ped up their Big League baseball season with a fourth place finish in the Canadian championships for 16- to 18-year-olds at Whalley Stadium in Surrey. The Twins opened with a big bang, blanking Quebee 7-0. Ryan Dempster struck out 16 and allowed only three hits. Tony Spitz, Jason Odegard and Mike Dixon all pounded out doubles in aid of the shutout. Unfortunately for the Twins, Dempster —- one of the best pro- spects in the country — left the next morning to pitch for Canada in the World Youth champion- ships in Ontario. But the Twins kept rolling the next day, hammering Calgary 13- 4, as Spitz turned in a remarkable performance, ‘The strong “righthander gave” up only three hits in five innings on the mound, and blasted a grand slam after singles by Josh Romer, Mike Zenko and Simon Pond. . Outfielder Ceaig Behnsen followed with. a three-run double to cap a seven-run first ‘inning. Odegard Glistered three hits against Calgary and Behnsen and Romer had a pair each. Adam Derkach later added a massive two-run homer and Jason Anderson added a massive two- tun homer and Jason Anderson added a two-run double. But the Twins fell short in the hit parade. The Chiefs only gave up 14 runs in the whole tourney, 10 to the Twins. The game against the Chiefs was actually played over two days, when a curfew cut short Saturday night’s game under the lights. It was completed Sunday morning. The Twins also had* to play Ontario on Sunday, and they came up flat, losing 10-2 to the Windsor crew. Still, rangy six-foot-four-inch Derkach driiled his second dinger of the tourney. (Derkach and Dix- on left for California after the championships to play for Modesto Junior College.) Even at that, the Twins still had an outside chance of heading for Florida and the Big League World Series, but dropped a 1-0 heart- breaker to the Maritimes.
