come from ever more obscure
parishes so far outlying from
the nominal source that at this
rate the appellation will soon
include the suburbs of Paris.

Typical of its hor climate
origin, Laureat is quite jammy
“and toasty on the palate now,
offering the same kind of big
fast-forward fruit that made
Australian Cab/Shiraz blends
an international success with
consumers who don’t want to
wait a decade to cut the cap-
sule. It does have a surprising-
ly complex finish though,
which suggests it will more

than repay the patience
required to stuff a case in a
dark cool corner and forget
about it for seven or cight
years.

What makes it especially
interesting is a comparison
with Calitornia’s “Meritage”
wines. California’s decision to
label finer wines by single
grape variety, in order to d
tinguish them from jug wines
using bogus “French” aliases
like “Mountain Chablis” and

blended to achieve the com-
plexity of the great Bordeauy.
