Though ball games seem to
have been universal throughout
history, appearing in Chinese,
Japanese, American, Indian,
Maori and Polynesian cultures,
England is considered the birth-
place of the modern North
American game known as foot-
ball, which reaches its peak with
the Grey Cup in November and
the January Super Bowl.

The earliest English reference
to a game of ball-kicking dates
from the Middle Ages, when
entire male populations of villages
engaged in what were called
“melees.” With much shoving and

roster-raiding and name calling,
the leagues decided to amalga-
mate. To mark the occasion, on
Jan.15, 1967, the champions of
each league met in the AFL-NFL
Championship Game. The bowl
gained a name when Hunt's six-
year-old daughter showed him her
new ball, one of those high-densi-
ty “super balls.” Ball became
“bowl” and the game had its
name: the Super Bowl.
