Shows can also be an opportuni- ty for the salon to present its vision of “the look” of the season. For Doreen Stokes of Ravz hair salon in North Vancouver, that look is the gamine cul — short and layered with wispy tendrils and a soft fringe. Only one in 50 clients may step out of her salon with this state- ment-making ‘do but many others will be happy lo incorporate ele- ments of the look into their current style. Next Sunday, Feb, 20 Raymond Salons presents to the beauty indus- try its direction for spring at the Robson Conference Centre in Vancouver, The “Enfantin” collection for hair will feature “soft and romantic new looks to complement the gen- tle, sensual and breezy styles that are popular in this season's Tash- ions,” Set to follow the show, with fashions [rom Wear Else?, are pre- sentations by clip and color artists from Sebastian, Paul Mitchell and Redken, and a makeover competi- tion sponsored by Wella Canada. Later that same day, the Vancouver chapter of the Aris & Fashion Group (AFG) holds its first-ever hair fashion and awards benefit. Founded in 1989 by American cosmetologist Jojo Marengo, the AFG ts an international organiza- tion of professional beatity artists that has as ils mandate to “take back the industry from the manufacturers and put the power back into the hands of the artists.” While hair stylists and salon owners comprise the bulk of mem- bership, there is also representation by fashion designers, photogra- phers, stylists, image consultants, makeup irtists, fashion editors and cosmetic surgeons. New York ready-to-wear design- er ftsaac Mizrahi sits on the | International Fashion Board as do hairstylist-to-the-stars Frederic Fekkai and Oribe, the models’ favorite, Vidal Sassoon heads up the International Legend Academy. Next Sunday’s event is present- ed by the [3 salon members of the local chapter. Headed up by Suki Takagi of Suki's, the group includes Richard S. Ego Hair Design, Ingrid’s on [2th, Focus 2, Elaine's, Lena J. Hair Design. Gerard Emmanuel, Moods, Axiom, Utopia, Avant Garde, Yusat"s and Netwerxx. With lively choreography and music, fashions from local design- ers and retailers, and the hotest hair looks for spring, the show is designed to appeal to the public as well as the trade, while the awards honor some of the industry's best. For professionals like Wil Taytor of Suki's, the event also serves to raise public awareness that hairdressing is more than just a vocation, “People think a haircut is a hair- cut explains Taylor, “But you don’t just go and grab a pair of scis- sors, There's a tot of theory involved."
