Anthony Hopkins Shadowlands * * *. (Savoy Pic- tures) Rated Mature (at Cineplex Odeon cinemas) Tim Bell FILM REVIEW IFE AT Oxford for C.S. Lewis was as comfort- able as his worsted wool cardigan in careful shades of brown. Forty years after his mother’s death, C.S. — or Jack, as he referred — (Anthony Hopkins) ad found his comfort zone. Life on the edge was writing children’s stories, debating with his bachelor buddies over cognac and doing another well-rehearsed lecture (suffering equals character) for women’s groups. He was well into his 50s before he got some joy into his colorless life. Joy Gresharn (Debra Winger), to be precise. And just in time, too. The visiting American’s sharp opinions and straight-forwardness were a marked contrast to his tweeds and the quiet country life which he shared with his tippling brother, Warnie (Edward Hard- wicke), At first, it’s only an awkward tea ° with Joy and her son who lapped up the stories of the magical land _ Lewis created. ; But their mutual respect gained momentum, until Jack burst out of his emotional shadowlands, fell in _..love and discovered that his belief, “the most intense joy is in the desire, not the having,’’ was just ‘theory. . 7 Fans of Anthony Hopkins’ last slice of emotional repression, The . - Remains of the Day, will be in four-star heaven. Hopkins is so zood at these roles, he’s being dubbed the Duke of Denial. Yes, sad things happen, and mostly to Debra Winger who ex- cels at lingering death (Terms of Endearment, anyone?). : . Although she ts miscast, there's enough chemistry to make the movie work. Director Richard Attenborough favors biographies, but tends to drown them in length (Gandhi) and sentiment (Chaplin). Here, he hits a perfect balance of intimacy amid beautiful manors and grand English countryside. Intelligent and uplifting (hmmm, sounds like the ingredients for a’ sermon), this is an honest and poi- gnant love story. : Terminator 2 - The Special Edition * & & (Image Laserdisc) Rated R Sixteen more minutes of footage adds depth to this bang’ em-up ac- tion. : ; ‘A special laserdisc version has a ton of extras including director James Cameron’s first draft. In all, it takes about 16-20 hours to slog through this fabulous- looking video, but watch the vol- umetevel — those THX-enhanced explosions can cause cracks in the foundation. ‘Grown-ups/Bleak Moments * * &/& (Connoisseur Video) Rated Mature Mike Leigh brings totally dysfunctional families to the fore, but with miyec results.
