Tread design is another impor-
tant factor, particularly in our wet
winter climate. The grooves in a
tire are designed to disperse water

_or snow from underneath the tire
so that a portion of the tire
maintains contact with the road at
higher speeds.

High performance all-season
and winter tires offer the best
tread patterns, but also cost more.

' The most important thing is that
there is enough tread depth to

- adequately remove water. A bald
tire will actually skim, or
hydroplane, across wet surfaces,
causing loss of adhesion and

steering control,

Wide tires tend to be worse
performers in the rain because
their larger contact patch disperses
the weight of the car over a wider
area. A good analogy is the dif-
ference between someone standing
on your toe with a stilletto heel
compared to with a flat heel. The
narrower the contact patch, the
more force per square inch is ap-
plied.

Summer tires have fewer
grooves than winter tires because
on dry pavement, grip is propor-
tional to the amount of rubber
contacting the road (all else being
equal). That's why ‘‘dry"’ racing

tires have virtually no tread pat-
tern at all. ,

All-season tires are a com-
promise. They must perform well
in the wet and dry, must offer a
soft ride but adequate handling,
and provide a reasonable tread
ife.

Original equipment tires of
most economy cars and family
cars are designed to provide
minimum all-around performance
at a reasonable cost, but they
usually aren’) above-average. You
can improve bath dry and wet _
weather performance significantly
on most. cars by upgrading to a
larger, better-quality tire.
